FPInnovations' Sawmilling research is dedicated to enhancing productivity,
reducing manufacturing costs and developing new manufacturing technologies
and processes, for both softwood and hardwood species, for commodity
products as well as higher-value products for specialized markets.
Our work is developed around six complementary areas which offer
opportunities to either reduce costs or increase value:
- Wood machining
- Wood and lumber attributes
- Sawing optimization
- Machine performance
- Process monitoring and control
- Development and transfer of new technology

Our

and tools that have emerged over the years from Forintek's Sawmilling
research:
- Bandsaw
Active Guide and Monitoring Systems - a self-aligning guide
system used to improve cutting accuracy, decrease target sizes,
increase feed speeds and fibre recovery (also available to non-members).
- Horsepower
Calculator - a user-friendly software package to calculate
horsepower requirements and optimise circular saw, bandsaw and
chipping tool efficiency.
- MSR Toolkit
- a decision-aid tool designed to improve product quality and
recovery from the machine grading operation.
- Optitek
- a sophisticated log breakdown simulation software used to quantify
benefits generated from various possible mill modernisation scenarios.
- Profit
Evaluation Program (PEP) - a package used to prioritise and
calculate the sensitivity of several production parameters such
as log cost, lumber recovery, productivity, lumber value and production
cost.
- Video Tooth
Inspector VTITM
- a system for inspecting and measuring saw tooth
geometry (also available to non-members).
- Feeds
& Speeds e-Course - an online training tool available
on this website, aimed at designing and optimizing bandsaw and
circular saws for many sawing applications.
