FPInnovations' Resource Assessment & Characterization research
is driven by the industry's need to understand specific characteristics
of wood species and their impact on processing, product quality
and value, as well as market potential.
The program is designed to maximise value from present resources and determine the impact of forest management decisions
on end-use wood attributes. This is accomplished by :
- characterising Canada's major commercial softwood and hardwood
tree species, including those that are currently under-utilised,
to better match wood quality attributes to product requirements
- studies on resource quality issues (e.g., yellow spruce, wet
wood in firs) so that processing parameters can be optimized
- development of scientific information needed for sustainable
forest management decisions, including timely harvesting, to maximize
product quality, value and optimal use of the available resource
- support for tree improvement programs to ensure that reforestation
stock is selected not only for growth performance but also for
wood quality
This
work is being facilitated with CT scanning
equipment now available in Quebec and in Vancouver. This non-destructive
x-ray scanning system reveals the internal structure (and defects)
of wood (trees, logs, lumber, panel, and engineered products).
Of special interest is also our Cedars
Working Group which fosters synergetic research on the properties
and products of North American cedars.
For our members,
the 2008-2009 Resource Assessment Program Summary and a description of its
current
research projects are available. A list of relevant publications
is offered within our sections Newsletter
(Publications Update) and Technotes.
Throughout the year, our Resource Assessment specialists organise
and participate in various technology transfer activities, with
a clear focus towards our members. For specific needs, we also offer
contract services
with strict confidentiality guidelines.
