FPInnovations Wood Products Division's facilities in Vancouver and Quebec were both built as
examples of non-residential wood-frame construction.
The
Western laboratory, located in Vancouver on the University of British
Columbia endowment lands, is built entirely of wood species indigenous
to Western Canada. The architectural design of the cathedral ceiling
in the main reception area and branching hallways is patterned after
a forest environment. This building was constructed in 1990, not
only to display the aesthetic beauty of wood and its functionality
in a non-residential application, but also to demonstrate the cost-competitiveness
of wood in industrial applications.
In
Quebec, the Eastern laboratory is located in the Quebec Technology
Park. This building, erected in 1994, received architectural awards
from organisations in Quebec and the United States. The design features
the use of wood species indigenous to Eastern Canada and demonstrates
a broad range of composites and engineered wood products.
Specific construction features of FPInnovations buildings in Vancouver
and Quebec
are highlighted in the attached Power Point files.
